Supplements

Posted by WLDudette in Supplements

Did you know?  Many multi-vitamins are coated with a varnish or lacquer making them easy to swallow BUT hard to digest.  Not these.  You can break them in your fingers.  That means they start to disintegrate immediately — for full utilization.

As a physically active person increases metabolism he/she will tend to eat higher quality foods. Digestive enzymes help break down and more fully utilize these foods.  Therefore, digestive enzymes were a major consideration in the formulation of this Daily Vitamin & Mineral Formula.

The Daily Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Formula includes Pancreatine 5X consisting of Amylase, Protease and Lipase. This type of enzyme is often expressed in NF units (National Formulary).

Amylase aids in the digestion of carbohydrate.

Protease helps with the digestion of protein.

Lipase aids in the digestion of fat.

The conversion rates are remarkable. A daily dosage of the Daily Vitamin & Mineral Formula has the approximate equivalent capacity to digest.

For athletes, active lifestyle and fitness enthusiasts, Calcium is vital for building and maintaining strong bones, blood clotting, muscle function, release of hormones and enzymes as well as assisting nerves in transmitting impulses.

This unique 3-in-1 formula also includes Magnesium (500 mg per two tablets) which is needed for making new cells, activating B vitamins, relaxing muscles, clotting blood, energy metabolism and is concentrated in the bones and teeth.  It also helps keep cells electrically stable, maintains proper blood pressure and, with calcium, regulates energy levels and maintains normal heart function and nerve transmission.

Zinc is an essential trace mineral necessary for the activity of more than 300 different enzymes.  Special chelates (“claws” that hold the nutrient and allow for better bioavailability) enhance the delivery and utilization of the minerals.

Vitamin D has been added to the formulation as it aids in the absorption of calcium from the intestinal tract and the breakdown and assimilation of phosphorus– which is required for bone formation.

Glutamic Acid and Betaine HCl help with digestion and absorption.

Over 35

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University studied bone density in approximately 400 older men and women.  Subjects were randomly divided into two groups, given either 500 mg of calcium and 700 IU of Vitamin D or a placebo, and followed for a three-year period. The group that received the Calcium and Vitamin D experienced better bone health than those taking a placebo.

Researchers in the Netherlands conducted a meta-analysis of 33 studies on calcium and bone mass in adults 18 to 50 years of age.  The intervention trials indicated that 1,000 mg of calcium a day given as a dietary supplement in premenopausal women can help slow down the loss of more than 1% of bone per year at most bone sites.

Research supports the fact that it may never be too late to supplement with calcium, especially in the elderly.  A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that calcium and Vitamin D supplementation not only slowed bone loss, but also helped maintain optimum bone mass in women over the age 69.

A Little Vanity Never Hurts…

From a cosmetic standpoint, there is anecdotal evidence from hair salons, day spas and other cosmetic venues that report this Cal Mag Zinc formula has been instrumental in helping to strengthen hair and nails.

Vitamin D 400 I.U.
Calcium (as Calcium Amino Acid Chelate) 1,000 mg.
Magnesium (as Magnesium Amino Acid Chelate) 500 mg.

Something About Mary – Episode 9

Posted by WLDudette in Something About Mary

286, 2 more pounds!  I feel like I should be losing that every week, so I am glad I am only weighing myself every other week.  However, this has been a really bad week for me.  I have been doing my best to follow my menus exactly but ate out unexpectedly several times.  It stressed me out a bit, but luckily one of the places had the calories listed for the salad I ordered so I felt good about that.

My father-in-law is in the hospital, he was hoping to come home today but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.  The week has been a blur.  Spending every free moment at the hospital with my father in law.  In the middle of all this, my daughter needed a new car.  I told her if she went to the dealership with an open mind and test drove the car she liked, I would join the gym with her.  Well, she loved the car and bought it and Sunday we joined a gym!

I did 5 miles on the bike and played around on some of the other machines.  We each have an hour with a trainer on Saturday so I'll learn how to use the equipment.  As I was on a machine, flailing my arms about thinking I was so awesome as I was working  out, there was an older woman with a paper going around to each machine.  I was kind of snickering inside thinking how stupid, she needs a piece of paper to work out.  Then I got off my machine, she got on, and sat the other way…..I was on it BACKWARDS the whole time!  Ha, now who's the loser old lady?  ME!!!!  My daughter and I made an appointment to learn how to use the machines, LOL.

Anyway, I am actually really excited about the gym.  I figured I will do my treadmill at home on mornings I work and hit the gym on the weekends and my day off during the week.  It's a huge gym, with plenty of equipment.  My daughter and her friend are going to do Zumba classes, while I use the gym.  Maybe someday I will be brave enough to try a class, but not now.  I hear they are a lot of fun but very hard!

The best part about all of the results I have gotten with your program is, my glucose numbers are now pretty steady, around 115-120 when I wake up and about 80 when I test during the day.  I am so happy about that, I go to the doctor on May 7th, I am hoping she will cut back on my meds again.  This past month my readings have been almost identical, they are no longer erratic like they were before I started your program, which makes me so happy!  It's kind of amazing when I look at my sheet from January and now April, night and day!

Talk to you soon!

Mary

Great job Mary!

Congratulations, 2 more pounds gone, forever….

So long as your glucose is under control and you are losing weight, you are moving in the right direction.  I am very impressed and proud of you that you were able to keep things under control with all the stress you and your family were under.

It is usually stressful times that make people give in, or give up.  Times like what you have been going through with your father in law.  During stressful events, most people turn to comfort foods and justify bingeing with self pity.  Not you Mary, way to go.

You are a good example of what a person can do when they have the right tools, information, and support to reach their goals.  I am sure you will inspire the many readers on this blog to be like you and take charge of their health!

I look forward to hearing about your Dr's visit.  It is so awesome that you are getting your diabetes under control and decreasing the medications you need to do so.  It is amazing how our lifestyle truly affects our health.

Thanks for sharing the good news.  Keep going!

Patty

Video Interview: Stress Reducing Benefits Of Massage With Melody Hurley, LMT

Posted by WLDudette in Healthy Lifestyle, Stress Relief, Uncategorized

I recently posted an article about how stress can contribute to being overweight and increase the risk for age related diseases. Experts agree that one of the top three ways to reduce stress is through therapeutic massage.

I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the top rated massage therapists in my area, Melody Hurley.  Melody owns and operates her own massage therapy business called Serenity Body Works.

Before the interview, Melody and I were talking about her past work experience.  She shared with me that she was a very successful manager for a large company (we all know this company).  She had a staff of people she was responsible for and she discovered the stresses of that job were taking her from the calm, easy going, stress free person she had always been to a stressed out, easy to snap person, she and her family did not like.

When she found herself having a panic attack at work one day, she knew something had to give (a panic attack can mimic the same symptoms of a heart attack.)  She remembered back a few years to an experience she had with massage therapy and changed her life.

In this informative interview, you will learn:

  • How going through pregnancy and having sciatic pain led Melody to being a massage therapist
  • How one of Melody's clients learned to control his temper and improve his home life
  • What effect massage has on blood pressure and heart rate
  • What trigger points are and what to do for them
  • Find out how anybody can make monthly massages affordable and a part of their life
  • How your immune system is boosted through massage therapy
  • Easy ways to start reducing stress right now (without spending money)
  • How 10 minutes can change your life
  • And much, much, more!

*SPECIAL BONUS*  At the end of this interview, Melody reveals how you can get a FREE massage!

If you live in the Tampa Bay area, you should definitely check Melody out:

Millet & Flax Chips

Posted by WLDudette in Healthy Lifestyle, Healthy Products I Love

I don't know about you, but I love to snack.  My snacks have to be low in calories, taste great and fill me up.  These chips definitely fit the bill for me.  They are low in calories, made of wholesome ingredients and have lots of fiber (so they fill me up and keep my tummy satisfied).  They even pass the husband test, (if my husband will eat it I know I can serve it to guests and they will like it too.)  I love to eat them plain, spread my favorite humus on them, and even crumble them up as bread crumbs.  Let me know how you like to eat them!

I buy them at my local health food store.  If you can't find them at your local store, you can purchase the same brand I buy from their Internet store at SamisBakery.com.

Is Stress Making You Fat and Age Prematurely?

Posted by WLDudette in Healthy Lifestyle, Uncategorized
You may remember me telling you of an awesome course I recently attended, by the Institute for Natural Resources, called Better Brains/Better Bodies. I promised I would share the valuable information I learned.  I am making good on my promise J. Here are some things I learned about stress…
It was amazing to me how much our risk for age related diseases is linked to inflammation. It was also amazing to learn that abdominal fat carries 4 times more inflammation protein than the fat cells found in other areas of our body. One of the biggest causes of inflammation is stress.
It seems stress consumes the thought processes of so many people I meet. It ranges from problems at home, being laid off from work or fearing it’s coming, a sick child or parent, a friend with cancer, to a fear of some imagined bad event or outcome.
When a client meets me at the gym for their workout, I often have to spend a few minutes helping them leave the stresses of their day behind, and be in the present moment. Sometimes, it is an impossible task. While my client is trying to make a deposit in their health bank with productive exercise, they are consumed with their problem, talking about the stress they are under.
At the end of their exercise session, they have not solved the problem causing the stress and have not been able to get the most out of their exercise program. Instead of leaving the gym feeling better than they did when they walked in, they leave the gym carrying the same stress they came in with. Chances are I will see them at their next appointment with either the same stressful situation, or a new one.
This is called chronic psychological or emotional stress. A very long time ago, the stresses we faced were more physical. Maybe a life threatening situation of a storm, or huge hairy animals trying to attack you while hunting. Our bodies would automatically react to these stresses with a “fight or flight” response. Do I stay and fight back or do I run like hell. Our bodies would naturally prepare us for this “fight or flight” response by releasing stress hormones (cortisol, norepinepherine, and adrenaline) that make our heart beat faster and breathe deeper to prepare our muscles for a quick reaction.
This is similar to what you might experience when you are driving a car and the person in front of you, slams on their brakes. You make a split decision to swerve, or slam on your brakes, to avoid an accident. You react and hopefully avoid hitting the car in front of you.   The threatening experience is over quickly and you will probably be sitting in the car, feeling your heart pounding, your muscles tensed and may even notice you are breathing harder than normal.
The human body cannot tell the difference between the different types of stress. It reacts with the same release of stress hormones no matter what type of perceived stress it is facing. Emotional/psychological stress can be created by an individual. Even though there is no real reason for the body to prepare to fight or run, the same release of hormones occurs.
Emotional stress can go on for days, weeks, months, years, and for some people, a lifetime.  So, stress response hormones are now in a chronic mode of being released, and your body is dealing with chronic stress and your health is about to be in a chronic state of decline.
I mentioned that cortisol was one of the hormones released in stressful events. Cortisol has been proven to affect the cells in our brain, and some studies suggest it is partly responsible for an increased risk of accelerated aging of the brain with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Cortisol has also been accused of causing weight gain. You may have heard this when some cortisol blocking supplements hit the market a few years back. However, in 2007 the Federal Trade Commission charged the marketers of two large cortisol blocking supplements with making false and unsubstantiated claims about their products effectiveness with weight loss.
So, what do we know about chronic stress and its effect on our bodies and memory?
1.   People who are under a perceived chronic state of stress are at more risk for certain age related diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart valve dysfunction, obesity, congestive heart failure, digestive disorders such as Crohn’s Disease and, in particular, Alzheimer’s and dementia.
2.   The stress release hormone, cortisol, can slow your metabolism. You may notice when you are “stressed out” you gain weight, even though you haven’t changed your eating habits.
3.   What do most of us do when we are stressed out? We reach for our favorite “comfort food”, chocolate, ice cream, fried chicken, etc. Most people experiencing chronic stress tend to crave foods loaded with sugar, fat and salt.
4.   Chronic stress can even affect where we store the fat on our bodies. Higher levels of stress are linked to increased abdominal fat. As I stated in the beginning of this article, abdominal fat is the worst of the fat cells to have.
5.   Chronic stress can also alter your blood sugar levels which can lead to chronic fatigue, mood swings and significant health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and according to recent research Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
6.   Often times, when we are in a state of chronic stress, our normal routines go out the window. Things that may have been a normal part of your routine, such as exercise and cooking healthy meals, may be replaced with “vegging out” on the couch, mindless T.V. watching and fast food.
Humans are the only species that suffer from chronic emotional stress. All other species use their brain only for survival. There are many things we can’t control, but we can control the way we allow ourselves to think and our attitude towards perceived stressful events.
We know that 15-30% of people get rid of destructive symptoms with placebo (fake) medication This tells us that just thinking they are going to get well, allows them to get well. In other words, the placebo drug empowers the brain to change the way the body feels. You can also consciously change your perception of stress to allow yourself to think and feel emotionally different about it.
Here are three things you can do to lower your stress:
1.    Exercise. Just Do It! (thank you Nike). Clear your mind and take time out for you and your health. You will be amazed at how much better you feel when you are done. You may even have a whole new perspective on what was stressing you out.
2.   Meditate. I don’t mean get in the full lotus position and perform rhythmic sounds from somewhere deep inside for hours on end. Find a quiet place in your home, office, car, close your eyes and try to clear your mind taking deep breaths. Take 10 minutes a day to clear your head.
3.   Massage Therapy. Make an appointment with a massage therapist and consult him/her about a plan to decrease stress in your body. The human touch and quiet moment release pleasure hormones that can combat the stress release hormones.
